Elevation from Terror was exhibited as a commemoration to the Second Aniversary to the London Bombings 2007. The piece was exhibited in St Pancras Church- the local Parish Church to Kings Cross and just up the road from Tavistock Square.
The work involved the creation of origami cranes with the help of artist Ingrid Plum. Over the alter we constucted 52 peace cranes- one for each victim, flying over an arial map of london. The map eventually being transformed into a lake by placing stips from silver safety blankets over its surface. The blankets acting as a bandaging and a reflecting.
Over the isle were placed the 4 perpetrators, also reflected in a blanket. A difficult engagement- the bombers also victims.
The Story
The piece is based on a mystical poem by Farid ud-din Attar “Conference of the birds”. The birds gathered together to go on a migration to find the mythological king of the birds- the Simorgh. When they arrived at the destination only 30 birds survived, all they found was a lake and reflections of themselves. |
